Ocean Village was opened by the Hellesen family in 1976, and didn’t change much for the next thirty-odd years. In 2009, the resort was acquired by a new ownership group headed by Robert Brown, a Tofino homeowner with twenty years experience in sustainable property development. Since the change of ownership, we have renovated all the cabins and made a bunch of upgrades aimed at reducing our impact on the planet. It’s an ongoing process, and we remain excited about making Ocean Village more sustainable while improving upon the things that make it so special.

Robert grew up in Glasgow, Scotland where he trained as a Chartered Surveyor. In 1988, after thriving in various real estate capacities in the UK, he transplanted to Vancouver where he met Nancy, his wife-to-be. Together they established the Canadian Business for Social Responsibility. In 1997, Robert formed Chesterman Properties, which quickly earned a reputation for creating environmentally sound buildings, winning the Mayor’s Environmental Achievement Award and an Ethics in Action Award in 2000. In 2001, with a partner Robert created reSource Rethinking Building, a green building consulting company that worked with other developers on sustainable building practices and materials.
Robert has strong ties to Tofino and cares deeply about its natural environment and the community’s wellbeing. He has applied his philosophy to the recent renovations at Ocean Village, as we upgraded the resort’s comfort and environmental performance while maintaining its affordability.
Born and raised in Duncan, B.C., Chris fondly remembers a childhood spent fishing with family and friends and exploring Vancouver Island from both land and sea. He attended the University of Victoria as an aspiring entrepreneur and received his commerce degree in 1997. Upon graduation, Chris worked in Vancouver as an investment banking analyst for RBC Dominion Securities. In 2000, he transferred to New York as an associate working with the telecommunications industry, then a year later to San Francisco as Vice President of mergers and acquisitions. Chris eventually left the Royal Bank family to pursue a role in the emerging online gaming industry.
In 2006, Chris and his wife Stephanie partnered with Jason and Jeanne Gordon, to purchase and restore one of five apartment buildings in the Vancouver’s West End. Ocean Village is the partners’ first venture outside of Vancouver.
Chris is married with one daughter. Chris’s fast-paced work life has reinforced his love for the island, compelling the avid fisherman and competitive athlete to become an enthusiastic partner in Ocean Village.
Born in Prince Rupert, B.C., Jason turned a passion for competitive sports into a golf scholarship to Taft College in California. In 1992, he transferred to BCIT to pursue a diploma in Financial Management, which led to a career as an investment advisor for RBC Dominion Securities in Vancouver. After four years, Jason left the Royal Bank family to apply these skills to the emerging online gaming industry. His success in that industry allowed Jason to depart from the company in 2005 and focus on his own passion projects and investments.
In 2001, Jason and his wife Jeanne acquired and renovated an apartment building in Vancouver’s West End before moving onto properties in Abbotsford and Prince George. He later partnered with brother-in-law Chris Nelson to renovate five buildings in the West End with a vision to enhance the beauty and the usefulness of the original structures.
Jason, Jeanne and their four young children make regular visits to Ocean Village. Although the their kids are all young Jason is excited to share his passion for surfing with the whole family.
A native British Columbian, Shane moved to California in 2005 to pursue a career in natural food sales. After several years in San Francisco and Los Angeles, where he was caught by the surfing bug, Shane returned to Canada to seize an opportunity at Ocean Village. Today Shane is Resort Director and is the resort’s most recent shareholder. Shane and his partner Tanya are proud parents of a first generation Tofitian daughter, Ryley. They can’t wait to introduce her to all of the activities that make Tofino such a special place.
