Bats in Tofino

Why They Matter and How Bat Boxes Help

When most people think of Tofino, they picture waves, whales, and eagles soaring overhead. But when the sun sets, another incredible resident of the West Coast comes out for a cruise: bats. These flying mammals play a vital role in our ecosystem, yet many people don’t realize how much they contribute to the health of our forests, gardens, and even our evenings outdoors.

Bats in Tofino: Guardians of the Night

When the sun dips behind the horizon in Tofino, a different kind of flyer takes to the skies. While surfers and seabirds get most of the daytime spotlight, bats quietly rule the night – swooping through the air in search of insects and keeping local ecosystems in balance. Though they’re often misunderstood, bats are incredibly important to both our natural environment and our community’s health.

Bats in Tofino are natural pest controllers. A single brown bat (be it a little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) or a big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) – the most common species on Vancouver Island),  can eat hundreds of insects every night, including mosquitoes and moths. That means fewer bugs at your campfire, less damage to crops and gardens, and a more balanced ecosystem overall. Bats also play a role in pollination and seed dispersal in many parts of the world, reminding us that these winged mammals are critical allies in biodiversity.

Sadly, bat populations across North America are facing big challenges, from habitat loss to disease pressures such as White-Nose Syndrome. Here on the West Coast, conservation efforts are increasingly important to protect these small but mighty mammals.

Tofino Bat Boxes

Scattered throughout the forests and along local trails, you may spot a funny looking box in a tree. These wooden creations were installed in partnership with the District of Tofino and Raincoast Education Society. Bat boxes are specially built shelters that provide safe roosting spaces for bats.  Because bats often lose natural habitat like old trees or crevices in buildings, these boxes mimic the tight, warm crevices bats naturally seek out, offering them a much-needed place to rest and raise their young.

Installing bat boxes in the community helps:

  • Offset habitat loss from urban growth and forestry.

  • Give bats safe alternatives to human buildings (where they may not be welcome).

  • Support population stability for local species like the little brown myotis, which is listed as endangered in Canada.

Tofino residents and businesses are encouraged to take part by installing bat boxes on their properties. The program not only supports bat conservation but also provides an opportunity for people to observe and learn more about these fascinating creatures in their own backyards.

How to Get Involved in Bat Conservation

Want to support bats conservation? Here are some simple steps:

  • Install a bat box: Place it on a building, pole, or tall tree at least 4 metres high, in a sunny spot.

  • Protect natural spaces: Keep old trees, wetlands, and shoreline areas intact whenever possible.

  • Share sightings: Reporting bat activity helps researchers monitor populations in Clayoquot Sound and beyond.

  • Learn more: Participate in local community events about bat conservation and wildlife stewardship.

Bats: Tofino’s Evening Allies

In Tofino, we’re lucky to share our nights with these quiet guardians and the wildlife that makes our corner of the coast so rich and vibrant. By learning about and supporting bats, we’re helping ensure that our skies remain alive with their darting silhouettes for generations to come. So the next time you step outside on a summer evening and notice the fluttering shapes above, take a moment to appreciate the bats and maybe think about giving them a home of their own. Bats are more than just shadows in the night sky, they’re unsung heroes of our West Coast ecosystem. By learning how to coexist with bats, we can help ensure their survival while enjoying the many benefits they bring.

When you see bats darting above the trees at dusk in Tofino you’ll know now that they’re keeping your night a little quieter, your environment a little healthier, and the community more connected to the wild magic of Vancouver Island.
