The Little Moments That Make Ocean Village

Some places are remembered for how they look. Others stay with us because of how they made us feel.

Over the years, we’ve come to realize that what makes Ocean Village special isn’t any one thing. It’s the collection of little moments that have happened here over decades – mornings on the beach, rainy afternoons playing cards, first adventures, family traditions, unexpected kindnesses and friendships that somehow followed people home.

As we celebrate 50 years of Ocean Village, we’ve loved opening the snail mail that has arrived from past guests and reading stories from days gone by. Some made us laugh, some made us a little misty-eyed, and many reminded us just how far a vacation memory can travel.

These moments may have happened here in Tofino, but they now live in hearts and homes around the globe. We wanted to share a few of them – and give them a place to live on.

Growing Up at Ocean Village

For some families, Ocean Village has been part of the story for generations.

One guest wrote to tell us they have been visiting since at least 1989, first bringing their own children when they were young. Years later, they returned with those children and their grandchildren – and in 2026, came back once again to celebrate their anniversary.

There is something pretty wonderful about imagining the same beach explored by little feet decades apart.

Cabins that once held young families become gathering places for grown children and grandchildren. Parents become grandparents. Kids who once spent their days digging in the sand return carrying beach buckets for children of their own.

The years change, but somehow the ritual of coming back remains.

A Honeymoon, a Jug of Wine and a Little Tofino Magic

Another letter took us all the way back to September 1982.

A newly married couple arrived at Ocean Village late on a Sunday night for their honeymoon. They were tired, hungry and quickly discovered that everything nearby was closed.

Then came one of those small gestures that can outlive the moment itself.

When the management learned that the couple were newlyweds, they surprised them with a large jug of their own wine and their own crystal glasses.

That simple welcome became part of their honeymoon story.

More than four decades later, the couple still remembers that stay – the kindness, the magic of being newly married on the edge of the Pacific and the place where those memories began.

The Mermaid’s Necklace

Then there are the memories created with just a little imagination.

One family remembered visiting when their daughter was around six years old. During one of their many trips to the beach, her parents secretly left a simple pearl necklace for her to discover.

When she found it, they told her that a mermaid must have left it behind.

And she believed them.

We love this story because it captures something about childhood, and about this stretch of coast, so perfectly. When you’re little, a beach isn’t just a beach. Driftwood can become a fort, tide pools are entire worlds and a strand of pearls tucked into the sand might very well have been left behind by a mermaid.

We hope that somewhere, that little girl still remembers the enchanting moment on Tinwis Beach.

From Beach Friends to Pen Pals

One of our favourite stories began during childhood summers at Ocean Village.

A guest remembered playing on the beach with their brother, catching their first fish with their dad and playing cards with their mom.

Then, at 12 years old, they met a 10-year-old visitor from Texas.

The two spent the entire week together on the beach. When vacation ended, they exchanged mailing addresses and became pen pals, writing to each other for years afterward.

Decades later, those memories are part of the reason this guest hopes to return, this time with two young boys of their own.

They can already picture them playing around the cabins and running down to the beach, beginning to collect the kinds of memories their parent still carries from childhood.

There’s something fitting about receiving this particular story through snail mail: a friendship that began on the beach, continued through letters and eventually found its way back to Ocean Village in another envelope.

A Place Where Traditions Begin

For other guests, Ocean Village has become woven into the rhythm of the year.

One family described it as their “happy place” – somewhere connected to cozy November storm watching, dressing up together for Halloween and traditions built over years of returning.

No matter how busy life becomes, they wrote, Ocean Village feels like home rather than simply a getaway.

Perhaps that is the greatest compliment we can receive.

Because vacations are usually temporary. You arrive, unpack, explore, pack everything up again and head home. But every once in a while, a place becomes part of the family calendar – somewhere you measure the years by returning to.

The kids get taller. Traditions evolve. Familiar walks are discovered again. And there is comfort in knowing that, despite everything that has changed since the last visit, the ocean is still there waiting.

Fifty Years of Little Moments

After 50 years, it would be impossible to count all the memories that have been made at Ocean Village.

First fish caught. First storms watched. Honeymoons celebrated. Halloween costumes worn. Card games won and lost. Friendships made between kids who lived thousands of kilometres apart. Mermaid treasures discovered along the shore.

And probably a few thousand sandy shoes left outside cabin doors.

Individually, they may seem like little moments. Together, they are the story of Ocean Village.

Buildings and places inevitably change over 50 years, but stories have a wonderful way of carrying the best parts forward. They are passed between parents and children, retold over dinner, tucked into photo albums and remembered when someone catches the smell of cedar, hears rain against a window or finds themselves thinking about Tofino.

Thank you to everyone who has sent us a letter and shared a piece of your Ocean Village history with us. It has been a privilege to hear about the place through your memories.
