Celebrating 50 Years of Ocean Village

For 50 years, Ocean Village has been part of family traditions, milestone moments, and quiet Tofino escapes. Looking back over years of operations, it is incredible to think about just how many memories have been made here.

600 months later, no one could have imagined it all in the beginning.

First dreams of Ocean Village were likely rooted in hopes it would become a place where families could slow down, reconnect, and make memories together. Visions of children splashing in the pool, families gathering by the barbecues as the sun set on a long beach day, and visitors returning year after year. The plans percolated over conversations with friends until slowly the idea became reality, and the first foundations were laid. The groundwork lead to generations of families coming back with children and grandchildren of their own, proposals on the beach, anniversary celebrations, birthday weekends, rainy-day card games, and sunset walks that would become lifelong memories.

Over the years, Ocean Village has become much more than a place to stay. For many people, it has become part of their story.

We believe our little village is more than just a place. It is the people, connections, and sense of belonging that help shape everyday life. It is the neighbours who wave hello, the familiar faces you see time and again, the friends who become like family, and the spot you return to remember those moments spent together.

Every guest who has stayed in the beehives has their own version of Ocean Village. For some, it is waking up to the sound of the waves and drinking coffee while watching the ocean. For others, it is late nights around the table playing games with family, s’mores by beach fire, bike rides into town, or watching children discover the ocean for the first time. Some remember the smell of salt air after a storm, the way a kite danced on the wind, excitement of seeing whales offshore, or the feeling of leaning against the doorframe to take in the view.

Ocean Village families have been creating traditions that span generations. There are guests who remember staying in the beehives as children and now bring their own babies (like the LeGuerrier family above). Some families come every summer; others return for storm watching weekends, spring getaways, or long overdue reunions. There are people who have celebrated honeymoons here, and others who simply come for the comfort of a familiar place that feels like home.

That is what makes Ocean Village so special.

18,262 days amount to generations growing up, families reconnecting, friendships strengthening, and countless moments that could never be replicated anywhere else. 438,300 hours of stories, laughter, connection, celebration, and time spent together. Ocean Village has become something unique to every person who has spent time here amongst the last 26,298,014 minutes. As Ocean Village celebrates 50 years, it is not just a celebration of the buildings, the location, or even the beehives themselves. It is a celebration of the people who have made this place what it is. After 2609 weeks, one thing is clear: Ocean Village is more than a destination. It is where children grow up feeling safe and inspired, where traditions are built, and where people come together during times of celebration and ceremony. It is the feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself – a community that offers comfort, familiarity, and connection across generations. We may have gotten rid of the shag carpet, but some things never change! 

For some, it is adventure. For others, it is tradition. For many, it is comfort, nostalgia, and the feeling of returning to somewhere that has always been there.
